Spartan Snack Pack: Nourishing Students, Strengthening Springfield

When it comes to supporting local families, few programs have made an impact quite like Spartan Snack Pack. What began as a modest effort to address weekend food insecurity among students has grown into a full community-supported initiative that feeds, uplifts, and strengthens families throughout Springfield Township.

How the Program Began

The Spartan Snack Pack program was originally created to help Springfield students who may not have consistent access to food over the weekends. The goal was simple: make sure no child goes hungry when school is not in session. With the help of passionate volunteers and local supporters, the program quickly grew into a dependable resource for families who needed it most.

Food insecurity is a problem across Northeast Ohio, and one local mother felt called to take action. Heather Anderson, an Akron mom, founded the Spartan Snack Pack program after seeing a similar initiative in her daughter’s school district in Green. Despite Green being a more affluent district, there was still a clear need for weekend food support for students. Seeing this, Heather realized that Springfield students deserved the same care and resources.

She recalled imagining what some students might face when they get home for the weekend:

“I picture, in my mind, these poor kids going and opening up the fridge and going, ‘OK, there is only baking soda in here.’”

Every Friday, students who receive free or reduced lunches are given a bag of food to help them get through the weekend. Heather’s compassion and leadership set the foundation for a program that would grow into a vital community resource.

Although the program paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, community support never faded. In the spring of 2023, the program was able to relaunch in a big way thanks to a major food drive hosted by Maranatha Bible Church. Their generosity helped restock shelves and reignite momentum at a time when families needed assistance more than ever. The program also could not function without it's Vice President Mary Stevenor. Without Mary's hard work and dedication Spartan Snack Pack would not be possible.

Funding and Community Support

Over the years, Spartan Snack Pack has been sustained entirely through donations, community partnerships, and creative fundraising. Support has come in many forms:

  • Quarter auctions
  • Restaurant fundraisers, including Give Back Tuesdays at GIO’s and dine-in events at Uncle Tito’s
  • Stuff the Bus food drives with Walmart and Dollar General
  • Annual back-to-school food drives from Maranatha Bible Church
  • Pictures with Santa food drives hosted by Lakemore Lighthouse Church

The program also receives tremendous logistical support from Springfield Local Schools Superintendent Shelley Monachino and Business Administrator Dustin Boswell, who provide access to unused space in the district’s admin/Pre-K building—saving the program thousands and ensuring operations run smoothly.

To make monetary donations stretch even further, Spartan Snack Pack purchases food from the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, where items are often free or significantly discounted. This allows every donated dollar to feed even more Springfield families.

How Many Families Are Served?

What started as a weekend snack program has expanded significantly due to rising needs in the community. In the fall of 2023, a full pantry program was added to help families access food throughout the entire week, not just weekends.

The pantry provides more than pantry staples—it offers household items, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene essentials, and seasonal support such as:

  • Thanksgiving meals (including turkeys donated by Duma’s Meats)
  • Christmas dinner items and gift cards for holiday groceries
  • Additional food to cover the extended winter break

As demand grows, the program is preparing to add even more students to the snack pack list and more families to the pantry roster.

Why Spartan Snack Pack Matters

Programs like this are more than food support—they are an investment in the future of Springfield Township. As the team behind Spartan Snack Pack notes:

“A hungry child is not an engaged child.”

Food insecurity affects concentration, academic performance, attendance, and long-term wellbeing. When a child misses school due to health issues connected to poor nutrition, they fall behind—and the entire community feels the ripple effects.

By ensuring children have consistent access to nutritious food, Spartan Snack Pack helps them stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn. This support strengthens not only the students, but the families and future of Springfield Township.

How to Get Involved

The program thrives because of volunteers, donations, and community partnerships. Here are some of the ways residents can help:

  • Volunteer to help pack weekend meals or assist with monthly pantry distributions
  • Host a food drive at your business, organization, or church
  • Donate financially through the program’s GoFundMe to help purchase food from the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank
  • Contribute items such as peanut butter, cereal, household goods, and hygiene products
  • Partner as a local business for events, drives, or sponsorships

Where to Donate

Food and item donations can be dropped off directly at the Springfield admin/Pre-K building, where the program operates thanks to the district’s support. Monetary donations can be made through the program’s GoFundMe, helping the team buy food at reduced cost and expand the number of families they serve.

A Community Mission

Behind the scenes, dedicated leaders like Pantry Manager Michele Stevenor (Snack Pack portion) and Pantry Manager Kim Wright (pantry portion) keep operations running smoothly. But the true strength of Spartan Snack Pack comes from the community—from churches, schools, businesses, volunteers, and Springfield residents who believe in caring for one another.

“Thank you for giving our program another platform of community outreach,” the team shared. “This matters deeply for our kids.”

Spartan Snack Pack is proof that when a community comes together with compassion and purpose, incredible things can happen.

To learn more, volunteer, or donate, Springfield Township residents are encouraged to connect with the program and help continue this vital mission of feeding and supporting local families.
